Sanitary pads made out of Banana Fibers – A Gujarat based Startup

Menstruation is a process where women discharge blood once every month from the time of puberty till menopause. This process is really important and it enhances the growth of a woman’s body. Women face a lot of pain and difficulty during this time of the month and utmost care should be taken in these days.

The most important thing a woman needs during these cycles, is a hygiene sanitary pad. Plastic sanitary pads are manufactured with various chemicals which might cause skin infections.

Many girls residing in rural areas are unable to afford sanitary pads owing to their high cost. This is one of the main reasons of girls dropping out of schools. Leaving schools keeps them unaware about the facts of a healthy menstrual cycle. Considering all these reasons, a start-up in Gujarat came into existence; Saathi Pads. This start-up began in the year 2015 with an aim to improve the accessibility of sanitary pads to women.

Saathi pads are made out of banana skin fibers. Banana fibers come from the stem of banana trees and they have highly absorbent properties. There are more than 12 million acres of banana trees planted. Earlier, farmers would compost banana trees after harvest, now they earn extra money by giving it for the production of these sanitary pads. These pads are biodegradable and do not contain any harmful gels or chemicals causing rashes or itching. Most plastic sanitary pads contain cotton from cotton plants which requires 6 times more water and 10 times more fertilizers than the banana trees.

The sanitary pads come in all sizes from light to heavy flow. These pads degrade within 6 months of disposal causing no waste.

This is a very eco-friendly start-up that aims to achieve sustainable development. It not only safeguards the environment but is also contributing financially towards the economy of our country.
